Disclosed are 5-arylindole derivatives of the formula: (see formula I) (wherein R1 is (see formula II, III or IV); A, B, C and D are each N or C; R2, R3, R4 and R5 are each H or a substituent; R7 and R8 are each H, alkyl, -(CH2)x OR11, aryl or aryl-alkyl; and the broken line represents an optional double bond), which are 5-HT1 receptor antagonists and benzodiazepine receptor agonists and antagonists and are useful as drugs in treating migraine and other disorders.
