Described herein are compounds selective for a 5-HT1D receptor, which have general formula (I) wherein: R1 is selected from the group consisting of CR5R6CH2NR7R8 and a group of formula (II) or (III) wherein R2 is selected from the group consisting of H, OH, C1-6alkyl and C1-6alkoxy; R3 is selected from the group consisting of H, OH, C1-6alkyl, C1-6alkoxy, C1-6alkylthio and optionally substituted benzyloxy; n is selected from the group consisting of an integer of from 1-3; Z is selected from the group consisting of C and N; --- -- represents a single or double bond provided that only one double bond is present in a ring at a time; R4 is selected from the group consisting of H, OH and C1-6alkoxy or null, provided that when R4 is selected from the group consisting of H, OH and C1-6alkoxy, Z is C and ----- represents a single bond and when R4 is null, either Z is C and ----- represents a double bond or Z is N and ----- represents a single bond; one of R5 and R6 is independently selected from H, C1-6alkyl, C1-6alkoxy and hydroxy and the other of R5 and R6 is H; R7 and R8 are independently selected from H and C1-6alkyl or R7 and R8 form an alkylene bridge which optionally incorporates a heteroatom selected from O, NR9 and S, and which, together with the nitrogen atom to which they are attached, creates an optionally substituted 3- to 7-membered carbo- or heterocyclic ring; and R9 is selected from the group consisting of H, C1- 6alkyl and optionally substituted benzyl. Also described is the use of these compounds as pharmaceuticals to treat indications where stimulation of a 5- HT1D receptor is indicated, such as migraine.
