ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A 5-methoxy psoralen, which is useful in the treatment of psoriasis and other skin disorders is synthesized from phloroglucinol by a process of synthesizing 5-methoxy psoralen comprising methylating phloroglucinol to obtain the monomethyl ether of phloroglucinol; cyclicizing the phloroglucinol mono- methyl ether to obtain 6-hydroxy-4-methoxy-3-coumaranone; re- ducing the 6-hydroxy-4-methoxy-3-coumaranone to obtain 6- hydroxy-4-methoxy coumaran; cyclicizing the 6-hydroxy-4-methoxy- coumaran to obtain 3,4,4',5' - tetra-hydro-5-methoxy psoralen and dehydrogenating the 3,4,4',5' - tetrahydroxy 5-methoxy psoralen to 5-methoxy psoralen.
