ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE 6-(1-Acyl-1-hydroxymethyl)penicillanic acid derivatives are useful as antibacterials and/or beta-lactamase inhibitors. The penicillanic acid derivatives have the formula: Image (I) (wherein n is 0, 1 or 2; X is OH or OCOR2, wherein R2 is H or (C1-C4)alkyl; R is H or ester-forming radical; R1 is, inter alia, an aliphatic group, a cycloaliphatic group, an aromatic group or an aromatic or non- aromatic optionally substituted heterocyclic ring).
