Disclosed are novel 6,11-dihydro-5H-pyrido[2,3- b](1,5]benzodiazepin-5-ones and -thiones of formula I (see formula I) wherein Z is oxygen or sulfur. These compounds, as well certain known 6,11-dihydro-5H-pyrido[2,3-b]-[1,5]- benzodiazepin-5-ones are useful in the treatment of AIDS, ARC and related disorders associated with HIV infection.
