ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A 6,7-benzomophan derivative of the general formula Image (I) having analgesic and/or morphine-antagonistic properties, is pre- pared by subjecting a tetrahydronaphthalene derivative of the formula Image (II) to a ring closure reaction. In the above formulae, each R is a lower alkyl group; R1 is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, haloalkyl or alkenyl group containing up to seven carbon atoms, a halo- alkenyl or alkinyl group containing up to four carbon atoms, a cycloalkyl or cycloalkenyl group containing up to seven carbon atoms, a cycloalkylalkyl, cycloalkenylalkyl, cycloalkylidenealkyl or aralkyl group containing up to nine carbon atoms, a furyl lower alkyl group or a tetrahydrofuryl lower alkyl group in which the furyl or tetrahydrofuryl ring may be substituted by a lower alkyl group; R2 is a hydrogen atom or a hydroxy group, an alkoxy group containing up to three carbon atoms, an alkoxyalkoxy group containing up to four carbon atoms, a nicotinoyloxy group, a lower alkanoyloxy group, a phenylalkanoyloxy or alkylaroyloxy group containing up to nine carbon atoms; Y is a halogen atom, X is an alkyl, cycloalkyl or cycloalkylalkyl group as defined here- inbefore for R1; and Z is a hydrogen atom or a lower alkoxy group.
