ABSTRACT New 7.alpha.-alkoxy-7.beta.-benzylideneamino-3- cephem-4-carboxylates having the group COO-Y+ (in which Y+ represents a cation) in the 4-position are prepared by oxidizing the corresponding 7-benzylideneamino-3-cephem- 4-carboxylate and reacting the product with an alkanol. The 7.alpha.-alkoxy-7.beta.-benzylideneamino-3-cephem-4-carboxylates are useful as intermediates in the synthesis of cephalosporin antibiotics.
