ABSTRACT Certain novel 7.beta.-amino-7.alpha.-methoxy-3-cephem- 4-carboxylates having the group COO-Y+ at the 4-position are valuable intermediates in the production of cephalosporin antibiotics having a 7.alpha.-methoxy group and a 3-carboxylic acid group. The 7.beta.-amino-7.alpha.-methoxy-3-cephem- 4-carboxylates are prepared by reacting a 7.beta.-benzylideneamino- 7.alpha.-methoxy-3-cephem-4-carboxylate with a hydrazine compound. In turn, the cephalosporin anhbiotics are prepared by reacting the 7.beta.-amino-7.alpha.-methoxy-3-cephem- 4-carboxylate with a suitable carboxylic acid.
