ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for the preparation of an 8-alkyl-5-oxo-5, 8-dihydro-pyrido(2,3-d)pyrimidine-6-carboxylic acid of the formula: Image (I) is shown, in which R is hydrogen, chlorine, lower alkoxy, lower alkylmercapto or pyrrolidine, and R' is lower alkyl, R'' is lower alkyl or hydrogen. The process comprises cyclising a 4-N(.beta. - carbalkoxyethylamino)-5-carbalkoxy-pyrimidine of formula: Image (II) to form a 5-oxo-6-carbalkoxy-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-pyrido(2,3-d)- pyrimidine of formula- Image (III) halogenating the .beta.-keto-ester of formula (III) to yield the corresponding 6-halogeno derivative, treating this derivative with a tertiary amine to bring about dehydrohalogenation to give a 6-carbalkoxy-5-oxo-5,8-dihydro-pyrido(2,3-d)pyrimidine of formula: Image (IV) and optionally saponifying the compound of formula (IV) to yield the desired acid of formula I wherein R'' is hydrogen.
