ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE New, racemic and optically active 9- and 11- substituted apovincaminic acid derivatives are disclosed of the formula: (I) Image wherein R is a 9- or 11-nitro or -amino group, and salts thereof. A process for the preparation of these compounds is also disclosed, which involves nitration of apovincaminic acid of the formula: (II) Image and if desired, reduction of the resulting 9- or 11-nitro substituted compound. The compounds of formula (I) are valuable intermediates in the synthesis of biologically active eburnane derivatives substituted in the ring A, for example nitro-apovincaminic acid esters or acylamino- apovincaminic acid derivatives.
