An auxiliary generator (7) supplies a sinusoidal voltage of fixed amplitude adjusted in phase to the mains supply voltage. A comparator (12), followed by a threshold circuit (16) and a bistable switch (18), enables the static contactor (3) to be opened almost instantaneously when the difference between the voltages of the mains supply (1) and of the generator (7) exceeds a certain preset value.
