A carbon friction material, preferably a woven carbon friction material, wherein a binder such as an epoxy or phenolic resin is used to strengthen and impart rigidity to the friction material. The friction material has a graded concentration of the binder such that the friction surface may have substantially no binder. A reinforcing substrate such as a fiberglass backing may also be present. The coefficient of friction at the friction surface may be further increased by, for example, shaving the surface such that a plurality of fibers become oriented in a direction perpendicular to the friction surface.

L'invention a trait à un matériau de frottement en carbone, de préférence à un matériau de frottement en carbone tissé, dans lequel un liant, tel qu'une résine époxyde ou phénolique, est utilisé pour renforcer le matériau de frottement et lui donner de la rigidité. Le matériau de frottement présente une concentration de liant graduelle, de façon que la surface de frottement soit sensiblement exempte de liant. Le matériau de frottement peut également comprendre un substrat de renforcement tel qu'un support en polyester renforcé à la fibre de verre. Il est possible d'augmenter encore le coefficient de frottement au niveau de la surface de frottement, par exemple en rasant la surface de façon qu'une pluralité de fibres s'orientent dans un sens perpendiculaire à la surface de frottement.
