The invention provides in a first aspect a closure for a passageway such as a bottle neck. The closure has a concertina element. When the concertina element is released, the closure can be removed from the passageway. The concertina element may have folds, including compressible folds, or may be in the form of a spiral. In a further aspect, the invention provides a closure which has processing means. The processing means, which may include a computer chip, is adapted to receive or convey various types of data, such as characteristics of the contents of the container closed by the closure. The first and second aspects may be combined.
