2121501 9309290 PCTABS00022 A coating apparatus (10) and method is disclosed for applying coating material (12) onto a web (W) supported by a backing member (14). The apparatus (10) includes a housing (16) which is disposed closely adjacent to the backing member (14). The arrangement is such that the web (W) supported by the backing member (14) moves between the backing member (14) and the housing (16). The housing (16) defines a chamber (18) having an open end (20) facing towards the backing member (14). A coating shoe (22) slidably cooperates with the web (W), the shoe (22) being movably disposed within the chamber (18). The shoe (22) defines a cavity (24) which is connected to a source of pressurized coating material (P). The cavity (24) has an exposed face (26) towards the web (W) such that the coating material (12) flows into the cavity (24) and through the exposed face (26) for applying the material (12) onto the web (W).
