A compound member (2) is formed from at least two extendible, coilable members (2a) each of which is reversibly configurable between a coiled form and an extended form. The extendible, coilable members (2a) are arranged such on deployment from their coiled form to their extended form, they join or can be joined to form the compound member (2).
