An apparatus and method for generating a narrow magnetic flux field, whereby small variations in surface contour of a ferromagnetic object can be detected at relatively large distances by measuring changes in magnetic force. The apparatus includes a hollow energized coil having an axis, a core axially aligned and axially movable with magnetic attraction, and a load cell to detect axial movement of the core, as the core moves axially when attracted to a foreign magnetic object. Preferably, the core diameter is approximately 25-30% of the coil diameter.

Appareil et méthode de production d'un champ magnétique étroit permettant de détecter de petites variations sur un contour de la surface d'un objet ferromagnétique à des distances relativement grandes en mesurant les changements dans la force magnétique. L'appareil comprend une bobine creuse sous tension ayant un axe, un noyau aligné dans une direction axiale et pouvant faire un déplacement axial sous l'effet de l'attraction magnétique, et un mesureur de force capable de détecter un mouvement axial du noyau lorsque celui-ci bouge axiallement en raison de l'attraction exercée par un objet magnétique étranger. Il est préférable que le diamètre du noyau représente environ 25 à 30 % de celui de la bobine.
