An apparatus (20) for determining the particle charge and size distribution of particles in suspensions (23) of artibrary con- centration is provided. The apparatus includes a cell (21, 22) for application of an unsteady electric field or an unsteady mechani- cal force across the suspension of at least two different frequencies for accelerating the particles. The resulting acoustic wave gen- erated by application of the electric field applied to the electrodes (34, 36), or the electrical response and the acoustic pressure at the electrodes (34, 36) generated by application of the mechanical force is measured. Transducers (37, 38) convert the mechanical forces to electrical forces. Apparatus (20) includes acoustic delay rods (24, 26) to suppress crosstalk and a third acoustic transdu- cer (32) at one electrode (34).
