A device network (10) has target devices (12,14), selecting devices (16) that are movable relative to the target devices (12, 14), and controllers (18). The controllers (18) are in communication with the target devices (12, 14) and the selecting devices (16). Each of the selecting devices (16) has a position sensor and an orientation sensor to provide spatial and angular co-ordinates of position and orientation when pointing to a target device (12 or 14) and upon receiving a user input. Each of the selecting devices (16) also has a signal processor to generate a control signal having the position and orientation data. This control signal is then transmitted by a transmitter, via a radio frequency channel (24a), to a controller (18a). Upon receiving the control signal, the controller (18a) determines whether, for example, a target device (12a) has been selected by a selecting device (16a) by comparison of the orientation data with a derived orientation based on the position data and the known position of the target devices.
