A method of offering the maximum expandability and/or greatest desirable functionality to a peripheral device by providing a user a plurality of downloadable objects adapted to be downloaded into a firmware of the peripheral device comprises providing the downloadable objects to the user, using a computer connected to the device to select the downloadable objects by the user, and downloading only the selected objects into the firmware of the peripheral device, one or more of the downloadable objects being executable objects and comprising relative jump and/or relative subroutine call techniques allowing the executable downloadable objects to be stored into either a code section or a user section of the firmware or volatile memory.
