A dual mode or multimode backlight (10) containing LEDs (22 and 24) as a light source. The backlight (10) has light cavity (12) containing a reflective material (16). The cavity (12) has an opening to allow light (20) to be directed to a display source (14) such as a liquid crystal display (LCD). Two sets of LEDs (22 and 24) are provided, one set for day mode (22) and one set for night mode (24). The night mode LEDs (24) are fitted with an NVIS filter (34). The day mode LEDs (22) are fitted with a filter (36) that suppresses the phosphorescence from the day mode LEDs (22). They filter suppress the IR energy and allows maximum luminance from the day mode LEDs (22). During night mode operation, the backlight (10) is flooded with light. Filtered light from the NVIS LED's would impinge on the day mode LED's (22) causing them to phosphoresce. The filter (36) over the day mode LEDs (22) removes the infrared energy from the phosphorescent light emitted from the day mode LEDs (22).

L'invention porte sur un panneau lumineux bi-mode ou multimode (10) contenant des DEL (22 et 24) faisant office de source de lumière. Ce panneau (10) présente une cavité lumineuse (12) contenant un matériau réfléchissant (16). Cette cavité (12) est dotée d'une ouverture permettant de diriger la lumière (20) vers une source d'affichage (14) tel un panneau à cristaux liquides (LCD). Deux ensembles de DEL (22 et 24) sont disposés, un ensemble pour le mode de jour (22) et un ensemble pour le mode de nuit (24). Les DEL du mode de nuit (24) sont équipées d'un filtre NVIS (34). Les DEL du mode de jour (22) sont dotées d'un filtre (36) qui supprime la phosphorescence des DEL du mode de jour (22). Elles filtrent et suppriment l'énergie infrarouge et permettent une luminance maximale à partir des DEL du mode de jour (22). En fonctionnement mode de nuit, le panneau lumineux (10) est inondé de lumière. La lumière filtrée à partir des DEL NIVS empiéterait sur les DEL du mode de jour (22) ce qui les rendrait phosphorescentes. Le filtre (36) disposé sur les DEL du mode de jour (22) ôte l'énergie infrarouge de la lumière phosphorescente émise à partir des DEL du mode de jour (22).
