A filter apparatus and filtering method are provided herein. The filter media arrangement includes at least two successive layers of filter medium, each of the layers of filter medium being of preselected different and successively decreasing average pore size in upstream-downstream direct, in-line through-flow with the peripheral edges therefore in confined alignment in a flow channel for removing particulate matter from a fluid stream (e.g. an air stream) to be treated in said flow channel and/or confined chamber means disposed between the successive layers of filter medium to create a preselected, extensive, direct, in-line through-flow confined open space which is substantially free of interfering material extending parallel to, and within confined boundaries corresponding to peripheral edges of the contained aligned filter layer and between layers of adjacent spaced filter medium faces without any other substantial confinement. This thereby allows a fractionated, free-flowing, distribution of particles between the filter medium layers to maximize particulate holding capacity of the combined overall filter media. The filter media confined size arrangement including the layers of filter medium and the confined chamber member disposed therein is determined by the relative thickness and the mean flow pore size of the filter medium of each layer of filter medium and the average particle size in the treated air stream.
