A filter element having a permeably porous, substantially inherently stable shaped body. The shaped body is substantially made of polyethylene particles. At least part of the particles are ultrahigh-molecular polyethylene particles either having a grain-size distribution with at least 95 weigh to of grains in the range of > 63 to <=250 micrometers, or having a grain-size distribution with at least 60 weight% of grains in the range of >125 to <= 250 micrometers, or having, in the case of no other polyethylene particles being present, a grain- size distribution with at least 70 weight% of grains in the range of > 63 to <=315 micrometers. Surface pores of the filter element are filled with a fine-grained material.
