A friction rock stabilizer (I) includes a center spine (7), a plurality of arms (15) extending radially outwardly therefrom, for urging a plurality of friction surfaces (13) into resilient contact with a borehole (14) wall. The friction surfaces (13) are positioned on an arc of a circle measured around the center axis of the borehole, which arc spans a center angle of at least 180 degrees.
