A dietary fibre composition comprising a water-soluble, nonionic cellulose ether having a cloud point not higher than 35 °C in combination with a charged surfactant and optional additives in water, the ratio of surfactant to cellulose ether being 1:5 to 1:25 by weight, is a liquid solution at room temperature and a gel in the gastrointestinal tract at body temperature. Said dietary fibre composition can be used as a bulk laxative and also as a slimming aid.
