The guitar scale and chord template is a teaching aid for students to learn where to find all of the chord shapes and scale patterns in a certain key on the guitar, (or any stringed instrument, e.g. bass), fretboard. The invention is a thin sheet of vinyl with rectangular holes cut out of it where the guitar frets lie. This sheet slides beneath the strings and is held tightly against the neck of the guitar with Velcro. The holes are placed so that the guitar frets don't touch the template. The template has dots on it, which show up underneath the strings and represent the scale tones for a certain key. (A different template is needed for each key to be studied.) Also, the chord tones for that key are designated with the symbols R, 3, and 5 instead of the regular dots so that the student can easily find where to play the scale tones and chord tones of a certain key on the guitar. When the student is through practicing, the student can easily undo the Velcro and slide out the template leaving the guitar unaffected. Different shaped templates will be needed for use on electric guitars, classical guitars, basses, and acoustic guitars due to the different shaped necks.
