A hair growth and restoration promoter having containing as an active ingredient, an extract drawn from at least one kind of orchidaceae plant selected from a group consisting of Calanthe R. Br., Phaius Lour., or other genera having a pseudo bulb. The promoter is obtained from the subterranean stem of Calanthe discolor Lindl., Phaius flavus (Blume) Lindl. or Oreorchis patens Lindl. through the steps of water washing, slicing, immersion in an aqueous alcohol solution to effect extraction, purification by filtration, addition of vitamins, amino acids, animal and plant oils, sodium chloride and so forth, and appropriate dilution with an aqueous alcohol solution. When applied to a patient whose hair has badly fallen out or thinned out, or been lost entirely, the promoter promotes hair growth and restoration.
