An engine is provided comprising a compression chamber to contain gas to be compressed and a first piston to compress the gas by movement of the piston into the compression chamber, and driving means are arranged to drive the first piston into the compression chamber to compress the gas. The heat engine further comprises an expansion chamber and a second piston to allow gas to expand therein by movement of the second piston out of the expansion chamber, means to feed compressed gas from the compression chamber to the expansion chamber, and heating means arranged to heat the compressed gas from the compression chamber. Transmission means are operatively coupled to the second piston to permit power from the engine to be drawn and means to form spray of liquid in the compression chamber is provided to cool the gas during compression.
