Measuring or sensing the downhole environment electrically, acoustically, mechanically, or by nuclear means, of either the borehole fluid or surrounding subsurface strata (the formation), is accomplished while, or during, a hole-finding operation. Combining the ability to measure or sense the downhole or formation environment actively from within (such as by means of a nuclear source/sensor), or as part of a hole-finding apparatus so that such a device can provide both mechanical and sensing functions simultaneously, or serially, is the focus of the present invention. A preferred embodiment integrates a series of electrodes as a probe on the tip of the hole- finding apparatus such that the hole-finder can measure borehole fluid resistivity R m and spontaneous potential S p as it guides the equipment through the borehole.
