In a method for joining at least two plate-shaped workpieces by a fastening tool and a device for operating the fastening tool, the fastening tool comprises a punch for exerting a punch force to perform a joining operation and a clamp for exerting a clamping force upon the workpieces at the joining area. During the joining operation the punch exerts a high punch force to perform the joining operation and the clamp exerts substantially no clamping force to allow for free material deformation in the joining area. After the joining operation both the punch and the clamp exert high forces at the same time to reduce any material deformations of the workpieces and to provide for compression of the workpieces in the joining area. Preferably the invention is used in a riveting tool for setting self-piercing rivets; as an alternative it may be used in a clinching tool.
Dans une méthode de fixation d'au moins deux pièces de travail de forme plate au moyen d'un outil de fixation et d'un dispositif d'utilisation dudit outil, ce dernier comprend un poinçon pour exercer une force de poinçonnage afin d'effectuer une opération d'assemblage, ainsi qu'un collier pour exercer une force de serrage sur les pièces de travail au niveau de la zone d'assemblage. Lors de l'opération d'assemblage, le poinçon exerce une force de poinçonnage élevée afin d'effectuer l'opération d'assemblage, et le collier n'exerce essentiellement aucune force de serrage pour permettre la déformation libre du matériau dans la zone d'assemblage. Après cette opération d'assemblage, tant le poinçon que le collier exercent simultanément des forces élevées afin de réduire les déformations matérielles des pièces de travail et d'assurer la compression desdites pièces au niveau de la zone d'assemblage. De préférence, l'invention est utilisée sur un outil de rivetage pour placer les rivets auto-perceurs; elle peut également servir de riveteuse.
