A high powered laser diode (10) that includes a pumped stripe section (12) with a varying index of refraction. The varying index of refraction can reduce the self-focusing phenomenon found in high powered laser diodes in the prior art, thereby providing a high quality output beam. The index of refraction can vary from one side of the pumped stripe section (12) to the other side of the pumped stripe section (12). The index can be varied by varying a structural characteristic of the pumped stripe section (12) such as the doping or thickness of the layers within the laser diode (10). A thermal gradient can be created across the pumped stripe section (12) to vary the index of refraction. The thermal gradient can be created by integrating a heating element along one side of the pumped stripe section (12) or creating unequal current flow through the pumped stripe section (12).

L'invention concerne une diode laser haute puissance comprenant une partie en bande pompée qui présente un indice de réfraction variable. L'indice de réfraction variable peut réduire le phénomène d'autofocalisation présent dans les diodes laser haute puissance de la technique antérieure, ce qui permet d'obtenir un faisceau de sortie de haute qualité. L'indice de réfraction peut varier d'un côté de ladite partie en bande pompée à l'autre côté de celle-ci. L'indice peut varier par variation d'une caractéristique structurale de ladite partie en bande pompée, de type dopage ou épaisseur des couches à l'intérieur de la diode laser. Un gradient thermique peut être créé sur toute la surface de ladite partie en bande pompée afin de faire varier l'indice de réfraction. Ce gradient thermique peut être créé par intégration d'un élément thermique le long d'un côté de ladite partie en bande pompée, ou par création d'un flux de courant inégal à travers celle-ci.
