In accordance with the present invention, a patient support apparatus (20) includes a frame (26), a patient support deck (100) coupled to the frame (26), a tray (202) positioned below the patient support deck (100) for supporting an x-ray cassette (204), and a lifting apparatus (200) for lifting the tray (202) toward the patient support deck (100). The lifting apparatus (200) includes a shiftable member (230) supported for translation relative to the frame (26) in a longitudinal direction (48). A pair of links (262, 264) are coupled to the shiftable member (230). A first link (262) of the pair of links (262, 264) has a first end (262') pivotally coupled to the tray (204) and a second end (262'') pivotally coupled to the shiftable member (230). A second link (264) of the pair of links (262, 264) has a first end (264'') pivotally coupled to the frame (26) and a second end (262') pivotally coupled to the shiftable member (230). A handle (302) is coupled to the frame (26) for translating the shiftable member (230) in the longitudinal direction (48) to spread apart the links (262, 264) and lift the tray (202).
