The light source comprises an evacuated container having walls, at least a portion of which consists of an outer glass layer (23, 23') which on at least a major part thereof is coated on the inside with a layer of phosphor (24, 24') forming a luminescent layer and a conductive layer (25, 25') forming an anode. The layer of phosphor (24, 24') is excited to luminescence by electron bombardment from a field emission cathode (40, 40') located in the interior of the container. A modulator electrode is arranged between the cathode (40, 40') and the anode (25, 25') for creating an electrical field necessary for the emission of electrons. The field emission cathode (40, 40') includes a longitudinally extending core (41, 41') having a central axis, and field emitting bodies (42, 42') extending from the core (41, 41'). The field emitting bodies (42, 42') are elongate and are distributed along at least a part of the length of the core (41, 41'). The field emitting bodies (42, 42') extend radially outwards from the core (41, 41') and have free ends provided with field emitting surfaces.
L'invention concerne une source lumineuse comprenant une cathode d'émission par effet de champ, et la cathode elle-même. La source lumineuse comprend un contenant sous vide dont les parois sont constituées, au moins en partie, d'une couche de verre externe (23, 23') dont la face intérieure est recouverte, au moins en majeure partie, d'une couche de phosphore (24, 24') constituant une couche luminescente, et d'une couche conductrice (25, 25') constituant une anode. Pour devenir luminescente, la couche de phosphore (24, 24') est excitée par un bombardement d'électrons provenant de la cathode d'émission par effet de champ (40, 40') située à l'intérieur du contenant. Une électrode de modulation est placée entre la cathode (40, 40') et l'anode (25, 25') pour créer le champ électrique nécessaire à l'émission d'électrons. La cathode d'émission par effet de champ (40, 40') comprend une âme (41, 41') longitudinale ayant un axe central, et des corps à émission de champ (42, 42'). Les corps à émission de champ (42, 42') sont allongés, sont répartis le long d'au moins une partie de la longueur de l'âme (41, 41'), s'étendent radialement de l'âme (41, 41') vers l'extérieur et ont des extrémités libres dotées de surfaces à émission de champ.
