The invention relates to alkali metal alkyl benzene sulfonates containing up to 18 C atoms in the alkyl radical as liquifying agents in water-based adhesives. Compared with naphthalene sulfonates, the alkali metal alkyl benzene sulfonates are relatively easy to produce and, above all, are readily biodegradable for equally good viscosity- regulating properties.
