A machine (1) for picking up ballast lying on a track (2) is equipped with a rotatable endless clearing chain (16) of a bulk material pick-up device (11) connected for vertical adjustment to a machine frame (5), said clearing chain (16) being positioned immediately above the track (2) between rails (12). A receiving end (21) of a conveyor device (22) extending in the longitudinal direction of the machine is associated with the said bulk material pick-up device (11). A sweeping device (28) vertically adjustable by means of drives (27) and having a sweeping brush (31) is arranged immediately following the bulk material pick-up device (11) in the working direction of the machine, the sweeping brush (31) having an axis of rotation (30), extending horizontally and perpendicularly to the longitudinal direction of the machine, and being immediately followed by a receiving end (32) of a second conveyor device (33) extending in the longitudinal direction of the machine.
