ABSTRACT A powdered metal-containing material consisting of 5-30 wt. % Cu, 0.1-4.0 wt. % P, 0.5-4.0 wt. % B, 0.5-4.0 wt % Si, 0-5.0 wt % Cr, 0-3.0 wt. % Fe, and 0-0.3 wt. % C, the balance being Ni. Said material may be used to form, by thermal spraying, plasma arc welding or brasing, a protective coating providing protection against erosion and high- temperature corrosion, on a copper-based alloy substrate. A stripping composition or a mixture thereof with a phosphorus- containing alloy is initially applied on the substrate surface, then said powdered metal-containing material is applied on the resulting coated surface. The adhesion of the resulting coating to the substrate, as well as its compactness and workability, are enhanced in comparison with prior art coatings.
