A medical syringe container comprising a housing (11, 12), an outlet (49) through which a new syringe (21) can be removed from the housing, an inlet (19) through which a syringe can be replaced into the housing, and holding means (34, 35) to prevent a second syringe (22) from being removed from the housing until a used syringe has been replaced into the housing. The container is particularly useful with needle exchange programs.
