A method and a device (1) for removing gas from wood chips, wherein the wood chips flowing downwards are heated with a steam flow that is cross-directional in relation to the wood chip flow. Preferably, steam is fed (11, 12, 15, 20) to the wood chip flow from the middle and edges of the flow.
