The device comprises two components; a depth limiter and a mechanical compression apparatus. The depth limiter determines the depth of chest compression and helps to identify the anatomical land mark. The compression apparatus has a base with a vertical pole mounted on one end. A lateral arm extends horizontally from the vertical pole; this arm can slide along the pole and is controlled by a quick-release mechanism. The lateral arm is connected to a movable compression arm by a hinge, which restricts the motion range of the compression arm to the preset baseline. To operate this device, place the apparatus base under the patient's chest, slide the lateral arm down until the compression arm touches the patient's chest wall, and position the depth limiter. Engage the compression arm onto the depth limiter notch. Press the handle to exert compression. This portable device is useful for performing external cardiac compression.
