A method is proposed for the manufacture of a hydrogen-permeable mem- brane, which includes a proton-conducting ceramic material and a elec- tron-conducting metallic component. The membrane is deposited by means of plasma spraying as a layer (11) on a substrate (10), wherein a starting material (P) is sprayed onto a surface of the substrate (10) in the form of a process beam (2) and wherein the starting material is injected into a plasma at a low process pressure, which is 10 000 Pa at the most, which defocuses the process beam at a low process pressure, and is melted partly or completely there. A starting material for this method is further proposed.
