In the field of three-phase electrical power systems there is a need for an improved method and apparatus for protecting a bus which obviate the problems associated with conventional bus protection schemes. A method of protecting a bus (16) in a three-phase electrical power system comprises the steps of (a) sampling voltage values and current values of each phase of the or each power system element (14) within a predefined protection zone; (b) analysing at least one sampled voltage value of each phase of a power system element (14) within the protection zone to detect when a fault condition arises; (c) on detection of a fault condition, determining whether the fault condition has arisen because of a bus fault; and (d) electrically isolating the bus (16) from the or each power system element (14) within the protection zone when a bus fault is determined so as to clear the bus fault.
Selon l'invention, dans le domaine des systèmes électriques triphasés de puissance, il existe un besoin pour un procédé et un appareil améliorés permettant de protéger un bus, lesquels pallient les problèmes associés aux principes classiques de protection des bus. L'invention concerne un procédé de protection d'un bus (16) dans un système électrique triphasé de puissance qui comprend les étapes suivantes : (a) échantillonner des valeurs de tension et des valeurs de courant de chaque phase de l'élément (14) du système de puissance ou de chacun d'entre eux dans une zone de protection prédéfinie, (b) analyser au moins une valeur de tension échantillonnée de chaque phase d'un élément (14) du système de puissance à l'intérieur de la zone de protection à détecter lorsque se produit un état de défaut, (c) lors de la détection d'un état de défaut, déterminer si l'état de défaut s'est produit en raison d'une défaillance de bus et, (d) isoler électriquement le bus (16) de l'élément (14) du système de puissance ou de chacun d'entre eux à l'intérieur de la zone de protection lorsqu'il est déterminé une défaillance de bus de façon à supprimer la défaillance de bus.
