A method and apparatus for assembling idler rollers. A pipe is positioned on a pipe cradle. A first end cap is positioned on an extendible support pin of a first end cap support. A second end cap is positioned on a retractable support pin of a second end cap support. A shaft is extended through the pipe and supported between shaft support lips carried by the first end cap support and the second end cap support. A first drive is activated to press the first end cap and the second end cap into the ends of the pipe. A second drive is then activated to extend the extendible support pin to exert a force upon the shaft to axially move the shaft into a central passage of the second end cap. Such axial movement is accommodated by the retractable support pin until a stop position is reached.
