The present invention relates to a control apparatus for controlling the displacement, in particular the scrolling, of a medium and/or the reading of a medium that has been recorded as a function of time, said apparatus comprising exactly two control members responsive to pressure or to contact or a single control member having exactly two active or contact positions for transmitting stop, read, and scroll orders to the apparatus for performing scrolling or reading, with this being done at a predetermined speed and in two opposite scrolling or reading directions, the durations of presses, contacts, or actions being compared for the purpose of defining the corresponding orders with two threshold values of predetermined durations, a lower threshold value and an upper threshold value, which values are compatible with the average performance times of human users. According to the invention, a prolonged press, contact, or action on either of the control members, i.e. an action longer in duration than said upper threshold value, gives rise to a continuous positive change in the scrolling or reading speed in the scrolling or reading direction associated with the actuated control member, or with the position reached by the single control member, throughout the time that the pressure, contact, or action takes place, until the maximum scrolling or reading speed has been reached.
