A receiver that receives (203) a stream of in- formation symbols (101) may detect that usability of the stream of information symbols received as fol- lows. Upon receiving the stream of information sym- bols (101), the receiver (203) separates the stream of information symbols into a desired portion and an un- desired portion wherein the desired portion is the origi- nally transmitted stream of information symbols and the undesired portion is interference and noise (204). From the undesired portion and the desired portion, the us- ability can be determined based on a ratio of the two portions.
