Natural gas whose calorific value is to be determined is illuminated with a light beam that is applied by a measurement head and that defines three measurement bands with different wavelength ranges each having a bandwidth of 10 nm to 20 nm and all situated in the near infrared. The intensity of each light beam is measured after it has passed through the gas, and the calorific value of the natural gas is computed in situ and in real time on the basis of the optical absorption values obtained by measuring the intensities of the light beam after it has passed through the gas.

Le gaz naturel est illuminé au moyen d'un faisceau lumineux qui est appliqué par une tête de mesure et qui définit trois bandes de mesure de différentes gammes de longueurs d'onde; chacune a une largeur de bande de 10 nm à 20 nm, et toutes sont situées dans le proche infrarouge. L'intensité de chaque faisceau lumineux est mesurée après le passage de ce dernier à travers le gaz, et la valeur calorifique du gaz naturel est calculée, sur place et en temps réel, compte tenu des valeurs dues à l'absorption optique obtenues en mesurant les intensités du faisceau lumineux après son passage à travers le gaz.
