A magnetic stripe card (10) with an en- coded card number including a bank identifica- ion number (14) and an account number (16) is issued to a customer with a value selectable by the customer. The central card processor (66) establishes a zero balance database includ- ing the card number (17), but with blank fields for the customer data and the value of the ac- count (78). When a customer purchases a card, the sales agent (40) transmits to the central data- base computer (45) which fills in the blanks in the database (45), activating the account, and transmits an acknowledgement. The card can be immediately used in ATM (50) or other remote terminals to acquire cash or purchase goods and services. The customer inputs a PIN number which is provided with the card, or an alterna- tive PIN number selected by the customer.

Le processeur (66) de carte central établit une base de données de solde nul comprenant les numéros (17) de carte, mais avec des champs vierges pour les données concernant le client et la valeur du compte (78). Lorsqu'un client achète une carte, l'agent commercial (40) transmet les données à l'ordinateur (45) de base de données central qui remplit les blancs dans la base de données (46), ce qui active le compte, et transmet une quittance. Ladite carte peut immédiatement être utilisée dans un guichet automatique (50) ou autre terminal situé à distance pour obtenir de l'argent liquide ou acheter des biens et des services. Le client entre un numéro d'identification personnelle qui est fourni avec la carte ou un autre numéro d'identification personnelle choisi par le client.
