A method and apparatus for improving the utility of speech recognition is described. The method involves capturing a spoken word, passing the spoken word to a speech recognition algorithm, receiving at least one text representation of the spoken word from the speech recognition algorithm, and passing a text representation of the spoken word to a display telephone to permit the user to select the correct representation of the voice response. The apparatus is an access server which communicates with a display telephone, a speech recognition algorithm which responds to queries from the access server and one or more databases which likewise respond to queries from the access server. The method and apparatus are particularly useful in automating such functions as telephone directory services using display telephones. The advantage is the ability to completely automate directory services for owners of display telephones and to significantly broaden the applications for speech recognition as a tool in information retrieval and transaction processing.
Méthode et appareil permettant d'améliorer l'utilité pratique de la reconnaissance de la parole. Cette méthode comporte les étapes suivantes : saisir un mot prononcé; faire passer ce mot prononcé par un algorithme de reconnaissance de la parole qui produit au moins une représentation textuelle du mot prononcé; et transmettre cette représentation textuelle du mot prononcé à un téléphone à affichage pour que l'utilisateur puisse choisir la bonne représentation de sa réponse vocale. Cet appareil est constitué d'un serveur d'accès communiquant avec un téléphone à affichage, d'un algorithme de reconnaissance de la parole répondant à des demandes formulées par le serveur d'accès et d'une ou de plusieurs banques de données répondant elles aussi à des demandes émanant du serveur d'accès. Cette méthode et cet appareil sont particulièrement utiles pour automatiser des fonctions telles que les services d'annuaire téléphonique à l'aide de téléphones à affichage. Leur avantage est de permettre l'automatisation complète des services d'annuaire pour les propriétaires de téléphones à affichage, ainsi que le développement considérable des applications de la reconnaissance de la parole en tant qu'outil d'extraction de données et de traitement de transactions.
