Method and apparatus for making an image of a lumen and surrounding tissue in a body by inserting a transducer in the cavity and emitting ultrasound signals and collecting and processing echo signals to form an image. The apparatus comprises signal processing means arranged for performing the steps of and the method comprises the steps of: a) obtaining echo signals from tissue at a given state of mechanical stress in a chosen direction; b) obtaining similar echo signals after a change of the mechanical stress; c) identifying the lumen-tissue boundary; d) comparing the echo signals to obtain a parameter indicative of tissue stiffness; e) performing similar steps for a number of directions; f) deriving and displaying the conventional echo image of the lumen and surrounding tissue from the echo signals of step a); g) superimposing in said image the tissue stiffness as a coded line along the lumen-tissue boundary.
Méthode et appareil de production d'image d'une lumière, située à l'intérieur d'un corps, et du tissu qui l'entoure. Il s'agit d'introduire un transducteur dans une cavité et d'émettre des signaux d'ultrason et de recueillir et traiter les signaux d'écho pour former une image. L'appareil comprend un dispositif de traitement de signaux servant à effectuer les étapes comprises dans la méthode suivante : a) obtenir des signaux d'écho similaires lorsque les tissus sont soumis à une contrainte mécanique donnée pour une direction donnée; b) obtenir des signaux d'écho similaires à la suite d'une modification de la contrainte mécanique; c) repérer la périphérie des tissus de la lumière; d) comparer les signaux d'écho pour obtenir un paramètre indicatif de la rigidité des tissus; e) effectuer des étapes semblables pour une série de différentes directions; f) obtenir et afficher l'image de l'écho traditionnelle de la lumière et des tissus environnants à partir des signaux d'écho de l'étape a; g) superposer dans l'image la rigidité des tissus sous forme de ligne codée le long de la périphérie des tissus de la lumière.
