There is a need to embed images and lines in ice surfaces, such as the lines and team logos in hockey rinks and the circular targets in curling rinks. These images are often provided by painting the ice surface and flooding overtop, which is complex, expensive, time-consuming and labour-intensive, or by applying crepe paper to the ice surface, which is difficult to do without tearing the paper and in any event, lacks durability. Vinyl and plastic materials repel water and therefore do not adhere to the ice, tending to float away when flooding overtop is attempted. The system and method of the invention includes a matte-finish-coated polypropylene synthetic paper on which is printed the desired logos, images, geometric shapes, and/or lettering. This printed paper adheres to ice surface through the application of water, to be encased in the ice and visible above from the surface.
