A method and apparatus for processing rechargeable batteries are disclosed including using processor means (100) arranged to monitor the voltage of a battery when it is being discharged and to terminate the discharge after detecting that the rate of change of the voltage has passed through a termination pattern indicative of exhaustion of a cell of the battery. The determination is made by monitoring the voltage during discharge and detecting when the voltage curve thereof exhibits first convexity followed concavity. The degree of convexity (3) and concavity (4), and the time interval within which they must occur, are determined by the processor means. The discharge is also terminated if the voltage reaches a predetermined voltage or if, after the termination pattern is detected, and before the voltage has reached said predetermined voltage, a predetermined amount of charge is removed from the battery. The invention also envisages recharging the battery first at high rate until the amount of charge returned to the battery is no more than the charge removed from the battery before the discharge was terminated. The charge may then be continued at a lower rate until the battery is overcharged to a predetermined extent.
La présente invention concerne une technique et un appareil de traitement de batteries rechargeables, faisant intervenir un processeur (100) disposé de manière à contrôler la tension d'une batterie en cours de décharge et à stopper la décharge une fois que l'on a constaté que le débit de la variation de tension est passé par un schéma de terminaison révélateur de l'épuisement d'une pile de batterie. On le détermine en contrôlant la tension pendant la décharge et en établissant à quel moment la courbe de tension présente d'abord une forme convexe, puis une forme concave. Le degré de convexité (3) et de concavité (4) ainsi que l'intervalle de temps dans laquelle ces deux phases doivent survenir sont déterminés à l'aide du processeur. La décharge est terminée quand la tension atteint une valeur de tension préétablie ou si, après que l'on a constaté le schéma de terminaison et avant que la tension ait atteint ladite valeur préétablie, on enlève à la batterie une quantité de tension prédéterminée. Il est également prévu, selon l'invention, de recharger la batterie d'abord à fort débit tant que la quantité de charge restituée à la batterie ne dépasse pas la quantité de charge enlevée avant la fin de la décharge. La charge peut ensuite se poursuivre à un débit inférieur jusqu'à ce que la batterie soit chargée en excès à hauteur d'une valeur préétablie.
