A method and apparatus for selecting an acceptable service provider in a multi- service provider environment. Where an acceptable service provider is in order of precedence one that is optimal or preferred as a function of the mobile communications device service subscription. The mobile communications device stores a search schedule used to optimize the scanning of service provider frequencies. Selection of an acceptable service provider begins with examination of the last frequency used by the device. If an acceptable service provider is found on this frequency it is used. Otherwise one is selected by traversing the stored search schedule.
